Boredom

I've had some times lately when I thought I would go bonkers with boredom.  And its not like I don't have things I can do - I'm not chained to my house or my desk at work.  I have the freedom to get up and move around, change the activity I am working on, find something to do.  I was telling a friend that when I'm home, I almost wish I was at work; when at work, I almost wish I were at home.  Its a weird feeling to not want to be either place and not know or feel enthused about what you want.  Like most people, I can tell you what I don't want most days.

Turns out that persistent boredom can be a problem that makes depression or anxiety worsen - I definitely don't want that.  So I am trying to fill my days with a combination of chores and activities - things that make me feel like I have a purpose and something to look forward to, adding in times of rest as well.  I know my plan is on the right track, but that doesn't make it easier to get the train to move.  There will always be times where I want to give in to rotting on the couch like I am doing in the above photo. Time to review and add to my list of mood boosters, which also has a couple of boredom busters.  How do you deal with boredom?  Please tell!

  1. Yikes, I just erased my long message but so sorry you are feeling this way. I find if I can figure out what I need or want more and less of in my life and start acting on one thing then it leads to improvement. Being present and not forcing myself to be productive all the time helps to.

    1. It comes and goes...sometimes I just give in and sit with it. And yeah, the lists are good and all, but they do put a fair amount of pressure on you to get things done.

  3. I agree, that if you're bored or depressed, it is very, very hard to get up and do anything. But getting up is exactly what helps snap you out of it. It would be nice to have a designated friend who will call and offer to go for a walk with you, etc. Sometimes going to the grocery store and just seeing people might help. Maybe if we ditched the texting and emails, and went back to phone calls from loved ones, we'd all perk up more. andrea

    1. I agree - one of the benefits of living with other people is that they can nag or remind you that you said you were going to do something...

  4. I don't have any helpful ideas. I don't get bored when the sun is shining and I can be outside. During our long wet winters I find life rather dull but luckily I enjoy reading. Like I said...I'm not much help.

    1. That's my goal for someday - have so many fun things to do that I can hardly wait to get up and at 'em each day! My mother was like that. (:

  5. I now refuse to let my to-do list add pressure to my week (not saying that's always been the case). If at the end of the week I still have things that haven't gotten done, they just get moved to the next week's list with no self-recrimination. I've been a bit depressed, and things have definitely been 'forwarded' to the next week a lot. But it's how I keep them in mind for when my mojo returns.

  6. I hope you continue to have energy to help you get over your boredom. I'm not bored at all. Would love to do things, but some days even my legs feel weak. It's about meds for me. Chin up girl.

  7. I'm sorry to read of your struggles with boredom. I've just had a look at your list of mood boosters and you've got some great ideas.
I quite enjoy downloading a podcast, putting on my trainers and some headphones and going for a solo walk around the block, the fresh air and learning something new (I like history podcasts) make me feel a lot happier. xxx
